This last batch of boards had me so excited and have been the best boards I've put out so far. I've produced 450 boards in my short journey of shaping, and all I want to do is get better. Minimal changes in this and that drive me to producing the best boards I can for my customers.

This thin red line means more to me now that it ever did. Being a firefighter now, I've learned so much and appreciate all that red line stands for.

I wanted to bring my two worlds together into one, so it was only right to add this subtle detail into my personal board. Really happy how this one turned out!

Fiberglass is an integral part of your surfboard.

Most people know boards are made of fiberglass and foam, but don't fully understand it. Here's a little crash course!

Fiberglass comes in a roll as pictured here. You pull it to length, then trim it. You leave enough to wrap the rails. Pour resin on it. Spread it out. Let it cure. Repeat on top.... easy? No! Fiberglass is the secondary structure to the board, much like an exoskeleton and a tricky balance.

Basic fiberglassing schedules for boards are 4oz, 6oz, and volan... that's what's on majority of boards. Now the fun part:

Too thick or too much Fiberglass = stong, but heavy boards with no flex.

Too thin or too little Fiberglass = light, weak, high flex boards.

The fun part is finding the right amount of strength, flex, and weight ratios, which boils down to this... 2 layers of Fiberglass on top and 1 layer on the bottom.

We're just scratching the surface of Fiberglass here kids.

This fish is anything but average!

The destructo model is a short, wide, fast, yet responsive little ripper. This is for the person that enjoys a fish, but hates its classic limitations. Designed to fit in the pocket while still getting you vertical.

Classic traits include a beaked nose and down rails, but modern rockers. A unique concave on the bottom that allows you to transition rail to rail gets you that performance feel. Pair that with a bump in the tail, you'll get that tighter arc and hold on rail.

It is hard work. A lot of steps in the process allowing room for mistakes to happen. It's dusty and dirty, but damn is it fun! You're blending concepts and science together to make a tangible piece of art that dances with mother nature.

Each board built is a lesson learned. A change in theory. A minor detail that was edited to perfect the function of the board. As a shaper I focus on small details that will change the big picture. I want you to pick up one of my shapes and have a hard time putting it down. Feel the quality and passion in board. If I'm stoked on it, then I know you will be too!

As a surfer what do you know about fin placement or fins in general?

The fins play a crucial part in your surfing! Obviously, they're there to keep control so you can surf, not slide. However, get the fin placement in the board wrong and your board will be too stiff, too slow, too loose, or flat out suck!

As the surfer, do you ever wonder about your fin placement? Probably not. You trust your shaper and go from there. Luckily, your shaper has probably done tons of trial and error to find the right position in the board for your fins. As a shaper we love that you trust us! We work hard and obsesss over ⅛ inches for the right feel. We also offer multiple fin options on our board for this reason. Quads one day, thrusters the next. This is to help you get the most out of your board. We want you to have fun out there.

But your board doesn't feel right.... this board sucks, blah blah blah. You have said it or heard it a bunch of times. Butttt have you ever tried playing with different fins? There are several different options of fins to put in your board, so you get a set you think suits you. But does it? Does it suit the wave your surfing? Does it suit your board? These are questions I want you to think about next time you're out there. Remeber conditions change, so you probably change boards, but why not fins?

Changing your fins can literally change your session. Got a board feeling stiff? Put a more flexible fin in. Got a board feeling too loose? Try a larger based fin. Board isn't whipping like it did last session? Waves changed, so your fins should too!

Born and raised in Virginia Beach, but built to work all over!

@jimmy_pockets_ wanted a board that was ideal for conditions here at home, so he came to the local shortboard builder. Stoked on how the board worked around town, he was ready for another one! Now having 2 in his quiver he felt confident he would have a good session no matter the conditions.

Take it a step further... a reaper and 464 kill it when the waves call, but what about something different? Something with some real volume for the smallest of days. He gets a mid length made. He loves it.

After 3 boards, he's fully invested and found the shaper that builds boards that suit his surfing. But, now it's time for him to travel. Will the boards work like they do at home? He comes in to talk. After good discussion, he puts full faith in my board building and let's me make 2 boards that he can travel with and have to play around with here at home. He gets a 264 and a 664. These boards are ready to go!

So he takes them, and I get this picture from El Salvador... safe to say my boards are born and raised in Virginia Beach, but built to work all over!

The best thing about working in @thefactory.mfg is that you have people who are stoked on board building. Happy to be there learning along with teaching. Another set of eyes to check your process. The ability to bounce ideas off each other.

We're here to get our boards better, but also to push each other to achieve the same goal. We share knowledge with each other, but we're also open to the public.

If you pick up one of my stringerless eps boards, hold on because it might just float away. With the reduction of weight you gain many benefits such as, faster reaction, pop, and speed.

Be careful though! Too light and your board won't last but a season. Luckily, through years of R&D I can prove a light board can still be a strong board with longevity.

The most overlooked and least glamorous part of board building... sanding. However, it's the part of the process that can make or break the final product. You can perfect the shape, the lamination, the hot coat, but destroy it in the last step.

It took me hundreds of boards to finally feel comfortable with sanding. I used to dread it, even fear it. Practice makes perfect! Now, it's a dance. A dance with your craft, you know every inch of your product, so sand it like you know it. Another step finished. The board is ready.

I started shaping in 2008 when I was 18 years old.

I started shaping in 2008 when I was 18 years old. Board building began after I broke a board I had just bought. Convinced I could make my own, I grabbed a planer and started shaping. Learning the hard way by just getting my hands dirty and teaching myself to board build, I started to gain traction. I started developing a name as a shortboard builder who makes fast and responsive boards. As the years went on, surfers started trusting and demanding my shapes. Fastforward to today, I'm known as the performance board builder making boards for the surfer that demands more in the water!

I stand behind every board I build, because I obsess over the attention to detail. This ultimately benefits you as a consumer, knowing your new board isn't going out the door until I feel it's light, tight, and built just right!
